CHICKEN TALK!

We now take a break from our regularly scheduled reviewing to bring you the following important message:

SYDNEY DANCE LOUNGE

Sydney Dance Co.

Purveyor: Sydney Dance Lounge, Walsh Bay, NSW, Australia

Menu Item: Grilled Chicken on Sourdough

Price:  $16 AUD / $17.50 with chips

Squawk: OK first of all the venue is fantastic. Right on the water, great views of the harbour and all the super fit dancers coming and going. But hey, we’re here to talk about chicken, not chicks. So here we go. This sandwich came nicely presented – clean and simple. They say on they menu it’s served with “oregano lemon rubbed chicken, avocado, tomato, rocket and Parmesan” and this potentially makes for a nice sandwich. The chicken was pressed and grilled flat – almost Cuban style and had nice crisp edges. We also love the “all you can drink Sriracha.”

Buaawk: Sadly SDL ruins what could have been a contender by putting too much mayo on the bottom slice. All that mayo combined with the heat/condensation from a warm sandwich sitting on a cold plate, creates an unfortunate situation where the bottom slice of bread gets soggy and, to quote my lunch buddy, loses all “structural integrity.”

HIVE BAR

Purveyor: Hive Bar, Erskineville, NSW, Australia

Menu Item: Sriracha Chicken Burger

Price: $9 Lunch Special (normally $18)

Squawk: Great bun. I believe the correct term is “brioche.” Super tender white meat – maybe even too marinated, not a flavour bomb, but overly moist. Decent fries, but a bit cold. Great (read: unusual) beers on tap.

Buaawk: Last time I checked Sriracha had some heat. This burger did not. Wasn’t spicy, no mouth burn, not even a tingle. They’ve mixed it with so much mayo, they may as well call it the “Red Mayo Chicken Burger.”

Rating: 5/10

TEXAS CHICKEN

Purveyor: Texas Chicken, Singapore Airport

Menu Item: Big Tex Burger Combo

Price: $6.80

Squawk: Chicken was better than it looked – juicy, tender despite being a little cool. Tomato was nice to see on there too after our recent Helsinki Hesburger experience.

Buaawk: What self respecting chicken chain has the nerve to:

A) call themselves “Texas Chicken,” and then

B) not have any true Texas style vinegar based hot sauce? That is a major fail. And when you factor in they we’re serving Asian style chili sauce instead, well that’s just plain wrong. Even if we are in Singapore. It’s not Singapore Chicken. Somebody in Texas needs to get dragged behind a pickup for that one.  Also, major Mayo overload and the fries weren’t hot. On top of all that, every table in the place was dirty, there we’re no napkins, and the sweaty, frustrated staff were just obese enough to make me seriously consider a Subway salad instead. And you know how gross those are.  With a name like Texas Chicken it has to be good – and it wasn’t. There’s probably worse out there, but we hope not.

HESSBURGER

Purveyor: Hesburger, Helsinki Finland

Menu Item: Chicken Burger Combo (Small)

Price: €4 Euros

Squawk: Greasy chips, but with a nice crunch, iceberg lettuce was fresh and crisp. Bonus points for being uniquely Finnish.

Buaawk: Burger is a fried, processed patty that may as well be potato, or Silly Putty. Overloaded with mayo and the bun was hard. And sweet. A not delicious combo.
